990866 Firm Recalls Sausage After Listeria SpottedAugust 28, 1999Washington - A U.S. company recalled sausage in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut after deadly listeria bacteria were discovered in meat produced by the firm, the U.S. Agriculture Department said. Gaspar's Sausage Co. Inc., of North Dartmouth, Mass., recalled 3,720 pounds of cooked sausage packaged on August 11, the department said. No illnesses have been reported. Government inspectors discovered the bacteria during routine testing, the USDA said. Exposure to food contaminated with listeria can cause stillbirths or be fatal to the elderly, children or people with weak immune systems. For most people, listeria infection causes high fever, headaches and neck stiffness. The case is the latest in a series of recalls, which began late last year, of food contaminated with listeria bacteria. In one case, 15 deaths and six miscarriages and stillbirths were linked to an outbreak of listeria associated with meat produced by a Michigan company.
