051120 E. Coli Warning Issued Over Beef Patties

November 5, 2005

Three Saratoga County residents became ill after consuming hamburger, prompting a warning from New York state for ground beef patties made by the Philly-Gourmet Meat Co.

The meat that is possibly contaminated with E. coli bacteria has the product code 2005A. Philly-Gourmet distributes beef patties to stores throughout New York state. It sells its hamburgers in three-pound boxes.

The state Department of Health said it traced the strain of E. coli discovered in the Saratoga County residents to the bacteria found in a hamburger in one of the victim's freezer. DNA testing confirmed the match.

A follow-up investigation is being conducted by the state Department of Agriculture and Markets, the state health department and the Saratoga County Department of Health.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacteria. Symptoms of illness associated with the bacteria include severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Other symptoms include vomiting and nausea accompanied by a low-grade fever.
