051118 Beef Symposium Set For Rapid City

November 5, 2005

Rapid City, IA - About 700 to 800 cattle producers and others are expected to attend the annual four- state Range Beef Cow Symposium, set Dec. 6-8 in at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The symposium will feature presentations on markets, cattle reproduction, animal health and current issues such as individual animal identification, animal diseases and trade, according to a news release.

The symposium is organized by officials in South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado.

One well-known native South Dakotan on the program will be Barry Dunn, executive director of the Texas-based King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management, according to South Dakota State University Extension area beef specialist Julie Walker.

“Dunn is respected for his understanding of the factors affecting the profitability of ranching,” Walker said in the news release. “He looks at complex ranch system and explains the indicators which allows producers the ability to evaluate their own operations.Coming from his ranching roots, he puts it in terms that are easily understood.”

Also on the program is Jim Robb, director of the Livestock Marketing Information Center of Denver, who is well-versed in cattle markets and factors that influence markets, Walker said.

“Mr. Robb has a tremendous ability in taking all the factors that affect our market into consideration as he looks at the potential future market,” Walker said.

“Perhaps, most importantly, he boils it down into terms that are easy to understand and apply.”
