050807 False Claims of Kosher, Halal Meat Means FineAugust 6, 2005Dearborn, MI - Wayne County commissioners voted to make it a misdemeanor to falsely claim that meat conforms to Islamic or Jewish religious laws. The move came after the commission received several complaints that sellers falsely said meat was certified as halal, or conforming to Islamic regulations. Halal food includes beef, lamb or chicken slaughtered according to Islamic law. Kosher food is prepared according to Jewish rules. A food seller violating the new ordinance could face a $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail. The law takes effect next month. E-mail: sflanagan@sprintmail.com |
