041190 New York Business Voluntarlily Recalls MeatNovember 30, 2004Mendon, NY - Mendon Meadows Marketplace, 51 Assembly Drive, Mendon, New York 14506, is voluntarily recalling store packaged fresh ground beef products (including veal) and fresh ground beef patties that were purchased between November 7 and November 14. They say the meat may possibly be contaminated with E.coli 0157:H7 bacteria. Two recent E.coli 0157 illnesses in Western New York may be connected to the products in question, therefore, Mendon Meadows Marketplace has voluntarily taken precautionary measures to recall these products. State and Monroe County health officials, along with officials from the State Department of Agriculture and Markets, and U.S. Department of Agriculture are investigating to identify possible sources of infection. They are interviewing patients and their families to determine which foods they ate or any other common activities. Because E. coli infections can be serious or fatal, especially for young children and the elderly, prompt diagnosis is vital. Please check with your health care provider if you or your children experience the following symptoms: coli infection, it is not always present); Abdominal pain or cramping; Fever, along with the other symptoms. Symptoms typically occur about three days after exposure, with a range of one to nine days. The bacteria are destroyed if the meat is cooked at an appropriate temperature. Always properly prepare and cook ground beef to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a meat thermometer to determine if meat is adequately cooked, especially in the center.
