041003 Food-Borne Illness Traced to McDonalds in Ohio

October 8, 2004

Piqua, OH - Health officials in Piqua, north of Dayton, say a bacterial illness that sickened more than 120 people is linked to a broken ice cream machine at a McDonald's restaurant.

City health director Greg Dion says the machine was shut down and has been replaced. He says preliminary findings are based on food samples tested by the state health department.

Dion says it's not clear how long the ice cream machine had been malfunctioning, or how long the staph bacteria had been there.

Health officials first reported the outbreak last Sunday, which initially affected about 30 people.

That number has grown to about 120 and includes people aged 18 months to 81 years. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and cramps.
