040403 Restrictions Lifted From Eastern Poultry Producers

April 6, 2004

The state of Maryland has lifted restrictions on farmers on the Eastern Shore now that poultry has tested free of bird flu for 30 consecutive days.

Delmarva farmers contracting with poultry companies are now able to receive new baby birds and will be allowed to spread manure made from chicken litter on their fields.

Both practices had been prohibited on most of the Lower Shore after the discovery last month of the avian flu at a chicken house in Pocomoke City.

In addition, Virginia has lifted the ban on sales, shows and exhibitions of poultry on its Eastern Shore. The ban, which had affected only two counties, was issued in mid-February -- a week after Delaware announced the presence of bird flu.
