040158 Pennsylvania Company Recalls Meat

January 28, 2004

Washington - A Pennsylvania company is recalling about 52,000 pounds of ready-to-eat meats that may be contaminated with listeria, a germ that can cause serious food poisoning.

No illnesses have been reported, the Agriculture Department said Wednesday. Georgia state officials detected listeria on a deli meat product by Vincent Giordano Corp.

The company, based in Philadelphia, is recalling 16 varieties of pastrami, corned beef and roast beef from stores nationwide. The meats were produced between Dec. 11 and Dec. 15, 2003, and were packaged on Dec. 16, 2003. Each of the products is marked with the code "EST. 5397" inside USDA inspection seal. The products under recall also carry the date code "350."

A complete list of the products is available at the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service Web site: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/oa/recalls/prelease/pr003-2004.htm.

Listeria can cause listeriosis, a rare but potentially fatal disease. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache and nausea.

Consumers with questions about the recall can call Bruce Belack, the company's vice president of sales, at 1-215-467-6629.
