031151 Tyson Creates Office of Animal Well-Being

November 22, 2003

Springdale, AK - Tyson Foods Inc. has created a company-wide Office of Animal Well-Being to monitor the living conditions and treatment of animals raised for its slaughterhouses. In a statement, the world’s largest food company said the office will oversee all Tyson chicken, beef and pork facilities. It is being run by veterinarian Kellye Pfalzgraf.

The Office of Animal Well-Being will ensure corporate compliance with the National Chicken Council’s Animal Welfare Guidelines and the Recommended Animal Handling Guidelines formulated by the American Meat Institute.

“We have always taken our stewardship role very seriously, and the creation of our expanded Office of Animal Well-Being is the latest example of our continuing effort to ensure the proper handling of the animals with which we work,” said John Tyson, the company’s chairman and CEO.

The Office of Animal Well-Being was initially formed by IBP Inc., to oversee that company’s “Handle with Care” efforts with regard to its beef and pork production. Tyson bought IBP and is expanding the program.
