031141 National Feeder Cattle Weekly Summary

November 15, 2003

AgWeb.com - Compared to the previous week, steer and heifer calves sold steady to 4.00 higher with fancy strings of ranch calves in the mountain states trading as much as 6.00 higher. Calf demand was reportedly good in all areas, even though recent frosts and dry conditions in the winter wheat regions have curtailed much of the fall grazing opportunities.

Calves as yearlings were scarce. The few yearlings for sale this week sold near steady but feeder buyers found it hard to pay current levels for a handful of yearlings to put on their calf loads. Sizeable premiums were paid for weaned calves with condition and the ability to go straight to the feedlot and perform.

This week's reported auction volume included only 24 percent over 600 lbs and 42 percent heifers. Auction volume for the week: 450,800 this week; 370,000 the previous week; 390,000 the same week last year.
