030928 Fine Beef Deserves a Tasting Party

September 30, 2003

Philadelphia - Let the savory juices of fine beef bathe the palette at The Penndelphia Scholarship Foundation's second annual Beef Tasting Party on Tuesday, October 14 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. at the Prime Rib. The host of the event is the Penndelphia Scholarship Foundation, which this year is partnering with the Army/Navy Host Committee as a way to raise a record level of funds to send disadvantaged students to college.

The Beef Tasting serves as an "appetizer" to the Foundation's main fundraiser, the annual "Armed Forces Dining In - A Military Feast." This year's dinner will take place on November 5 at the Inn at Penn (University City) and will feature guest speaker Lt. Gen. William J. Lennox, Jr., Superintendent of the United States Military Academy, West Point.

The Prime Rib, along with Ashley Foods Inc., of Philadelphia, again will be donating their services to the Foundation for the evening. Penndelphia Board Chairman Terry Williamson, a former Marine, along with Col. Christopher L. Baker USMCR (Ret.) in formal military attire, will lead the traditional tasting, which dates back to its adaptation by America's colonial armies from the British Regimental Mess.

Like fine wine, different cuts of beef have distinct textures, flavors and aromas. Board and Committee members, and representatives of the media will be on hand to taste the variety of prepared beef cuts and cast ballots for their favorites. This will serve as a shortened preview of the age-old military Tasting of the Beef, which will be conducted at the "Dining In," a banquet featuring military ceremony and music.

The Foundation is a non-profit organization of former members of all branches of military service, and other volunteers who award grants to high school students in the area who have demonstrated their commitment to academic excellence. The Army/Navy Host Committee, which is committed to keeping the historic rivalry of the annual Army/Navy football game an honored Philadelphia tradition, is partnering with Penndelphia as part of its "Red, White and You" program of community outreach. Ronald J. Naples, Chairman and CEO of Quaker Chemical Corporation, and Rear Admiral Thomas C. Lynch USN (Ret.) are co- chairs of the committee, and USMA and USNA graduates, respectively.
