030162 Inspectors Eye Meat Coming Into DetroitJanuary 30, 2003With Detroit being the second largest U.S. port of entry for meat, the federal government has presented five import surveillance inspectors to check for tampering and altering of meat shipments. The inspectors will also be working with port managers to track potential problems. Elsa Murano, U.S. Department of Agriculture food secretary, said it's vital to implement this program in Detroit because of the amount of meat that is shipped here. Murano said that by March 15, more inspectors will be trained and assigned to additional cities. Import inspectors already are at work in five major port cities, including Detroit, said Murano.
