030150 SD Firm Recalls Beef ProductsJanuary 23, 2003Washington - A South Dakota firm is voluntarily recalling about 2,100 pounds of cooked beef products that may be contaminated with listeria, the Department of Agriculture announced. Dakota Foods Inc. in Sioux Falls, S.D., said the products are 30-pound cases containing twelve 2.5-pound individual packages of "Orion, Quality Products Through Quality People, Cooked Seasoned Sliced Beef." Each case has the code "75718" and the establishment code "7096" inside the USDA seal of inspection. The items were produced on Nov. 6, 2002, and were distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutions in Sioux Falls and exported to Canada and Bahrain. The problem was discovered through the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service testing, prompted by a positive listeria result reported by Canadian officials. Food contaminated with isteria can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. There have been no reports of illnesses from the product.
