021103 Hannaford Sell Irradiated Ground Beef in NENovember 8, 2002San Diego, CA - SureBeam Corporation announced that consumers can now buy SureBeam processed fresh ground beef at Hannaford and Shop'n Save supermarkets. With 117 stores in five states, Hannaford will offer case-ready fresh ground beef processed with SureBeam Corporation's revolutionary electron beam technology, a process that uses ordinary electricity to safely eliminate the threat of dangerous bacteria from food products. "We are underscoring our commitment to food safety by offering SureBeam processed fresh ground beef to our customers," said Karen Fernald, Hannaford Bros. Co. Vice President of Perishable Merchandising. "Consumers deserve a choice in products they purchase and now they have one in fresh ground beef." Hannaford is selling SureBeam processed fresh ground beef products in one-pound case-ready packages -- 93-percent and 85-percent lean ground beef. "It's great to have Hannaford joining the list of leading grocery retailers that are offering a SureBeam choice to their customers," said Larry Oberkfell, SureBeam Chairman, President and CEO. "For the first time, shoppers in Maine will join with their neighbors in other New England states in being able to purchase SureBeam processed fresh ground beef." Similar to a microwave oven, SureBeam technology uses electricity as an energy source to irradiate and to help eliminate harmful bacteria such as E.coli, Listeria, and Salmonella. The SureBeam patented system is based on proven electron beam technology that destroys dangerous bacteria, much like thermal pasteurization does to milk. Hannaford's entry into the market brings to over 950 the total number of stores in the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States offering SureBeam processed fresh ground beef. This is in addition to the thousands of supermarkets providing SureBeam processed frozen hamburger patties, which are also provided through home delivery, direct mail and food service.
