020760 Doctors Praise Fast-Food Lawsuit in NYJuly 28, 2002Washington - The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) applauds the lawsuit filed in a New York State court that holds four fast-food chains responsible for an obese man's health problems. The group warns that physicians who prescribe meat-heavy diets to their patients might also be at legal risk for health problems associated with these foods. Nutrition and legal experts are immediately available for comment. "This is no doubt just the first of many lawsuits holding the food industry at least partially to blame for America's diet-related epidemics," says PCRM president and nutrition researcher Neal D. Barnard, M.D. Decades of scientific evidence show that the cholesterol and saturated fat in beef, chicken, pork, and dairy products dramatically increase the risk of colon cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, obesity, and other diseases." Next week PCRM will launch a new campaign addressing the health and legal risks associated with consuming high-protein diets. "Given the many health risks associated with meat-heavy, high-protein diets, doctors who prescribe them could be assuming serious legal risk," says Mindy Kursban, PCRM's chief legal counsel. To schedule an immediate interview with a PCRM expert, call Ms. Simon Chaitowitz at 202-686-2210, ext. 309. Founded in 1985, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is a nonprofit organization that promotes preventive medicine, particularly good nutrition, and conducts clinical research trials. PCRM also promotes higher standards in research. Source: U.S. Newswire E-mail: sflanagan@sprintmail.com |
