010726 Sara Lee Recalls Packaged Lunch Meats

July 27, 2001

Cincinnati - Sara Lee Corp. said it is voluntarily recalling about 13,600 pounds of Sara Lee and Quality Packing sliced, packaged lunch meats because the products may contain the Salmonella bacteria.

The Sara Lee Foods unit of the Chicago-based company said it is taking this immediate action as a result of a single reported illness.

Only the following products with these specific codes are affected by the recall: Sara Lee Cajun Style Beef (SKU 16649), Sara Lee Roast Beef (SKU 16683), Sara Lee Brown Sugar Ham (SKU 16688), Quality Packing Co. Cajun Style Beef Fully Cooked, Quality Packing Co. Sliced USDA Choice Roast Beef.

No other code dates or varieties are affected by the recall.

Since the products have a “sell by” date of June 27 or July 4, most should already have been consumed or thrown away, the company said.

The company has set up a toll-free information line at (800) 323-7117 for consumers' questions, and urged anyone who still has the nominated products to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Salmonella bacteria -- often found in a variety of foods such as meats, milk, eggs and vegetables -- can sometimes result in an infection called salmonellosis, which can cause diarrhea, abdominal pains, chills, fever, nausea and vomiting eight to 72 hours after infection.
