010526 Steak n Shake Finds No Tainted BeefMay 10, 2001Indianapolis, IN - The Steak n Shake Company announced that it has verified that no E.coli 0157:H7 tainted beef is currently present in any of the chains 378 restaurants or distribution facilities. “The health and safety of our guests is always our primary focus,” said Gary Reinwald, Senior Vice President of Operations. “We were notified late yesterday that the U.S. Department of Agriculture had discovered E.coli 0157:H7 in a non-Steak n Shake beef case packed by our supplier, Emmpak Foods. Emmpak told us that some of this beef may have been added to our product on February 8, 2001. We immediately responded by examining all packs in all restaurants. The investigation verified that no E.coli 0157:H7 tainted beef is present in any Steak n Shake restaurant.” Steak n Shake grills every Steakburger at 350 degrees. The high temperature and the thin grilling style raises the internal temperature of the burger well above 160 degrees, which will kill any harmful bacteria, if present. “We have had no reported cases of E.coli in our 67 years of operations,” said Gary Reinwald. “Food safety is our utmost concern and we will continue to work around the clock with our supplier to guarantee the quality of each and every Steakburger.” E-mail: sflanagan@sprintmail.com |
