010436 USDA Ups US Beef Exports In 2001

April 11, 2001

Washington - The U.S. Agriculture Department raised its estimate of U.S. beef exports in 2001 to 2.570 billion pounds, up 40 million pounds from a previous forecast.

The USDA also trimmed its forecast of pork production to 19.120 billion pounds, down 110 million pounds from the government's March estimate, citing slower breeding herd productivity gains than expected.

Accompanying the decline in U.S. pork production was an increase in the estimated 2001 price for barrows and gilts to a range of $42 to $44 per hundredweight. The USDA, in its monthly world supply and demand report, had previously forecast a range of $40 to $43 per hundredweight.
