001252 Albertson's and Hormel Donate 11,500 HamsDecember 23, 2000Boise, ID - Albertson's, Inc., and Hormel Foods have teamed up to donate more than 11,500 Hormel CURE 81 hams, a value of more than $140,000, to numerous nonprofit organizations around the country as part of the Hormel Hams for the Holidays hunger-relief campaign. “Hunger is an unhealthy reality our nation faces,” said Jenny Enochson, Albertson's Corporate Director, Community & Media Relations. “This donation will help put a delicious dinner in front of thousands of Americans during the holiday season.” This is the 11th year Albertson's stores have participated in the Hormel Hams for the Holidays hunger-relief campaign. The donation was determined by the volume of qualifying Hormel Foods products purchased by Albertson's customers throughout the holiday season. The 70,500 pounds of ham will feed approximately 56,400 people. “The Hormel Hams for the Holidays program is a way for us to give back to the community,” said Tom Byom, regional manager, Hormel Foods. “For more than a decade, it has provided Americans across the country with a chance to help the less fortunate simply by putting Hormel meat products on their shopping list.” Every year, millions of Americans live with -- and suffer from -- hunger. And despite the still-growing problem, the Hormel Hams for the Holidays program has fed more than 13 million people since it began in 1989. In its 11th year, Hormel Foods expects to feed an additional three million people. Through the campaign, consumer purchases of select Hormel Foods products go toward the donation of HORMEL CURE 81 Hams to food banks and other nonprofit groups during the holiday season. Local supermarkets carrying Hormel meat products may participate in the program, which runs from October through December. Albertson's believes in being a good neighbor by contributing to the quality of life in the diverse communities it serves. Last year, the company donated more than $48 million cash and in-kind donations to help meet community needs. Support also included more than 20 million pounds of food. The Hormel Hams for the Holidays program is a perfect extension of Albertson's commitment to hunger relief.
