November 4, 2000

Approximately 750 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:57 is being voluntarily recalled, USDA announced.

The meat, produced by Badgerland Meat and Provisions, a Madison, Wis. firm, is voluntarily recalling "Wisconsin Premier Fresh Ground Beef Patties," in 1.5 lb retail packages of 6 patties. Each package bears the establishment number "Est. 1267" inside the USDA seal of inspection.

There is also 10 to 40 pound boxes of ground beef and ground beef patties marked with the date code of 10 25 00, and with the same establishment number of "Est. 1267," that are also being recalled.

The beef patties were produced on Oct. 25 and distributed as retail packages to stores in Beloit, Kenosha and Green Bay, Wis. The 10 to 40 pound boxes of beef were sent to restaurants and taverns in Madison, Wis.

"Because of the potential hazard of foodborne illness from consumption of meat products contaminated with pathogens such as the E. coli bacteria, I urge consumers who have purchased the suspect product not to eat it and return it to the place of purchase," Thomas J. Billy, Food Safety and Inspection Services administrator, said.

E. coli is a potentially deadly pathogen that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, the elderly and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.

The FSIS has not received any reports of illness associated with consumption of this product.
