001104 Georgia Ground Beef Recalled for E. coliNovember 2, 2000Atlanta, GA - Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced that various ground beef products from Omaha Steaks International of Omaha, Nebraska, have been voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer because they may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. Being recalled are Omaha Steaks Burgers in 48-ounce boxes of 12 burgers, item number 658; Omaha Steaks Angus Ground Beef Chuck Patties in 12.5-pound boxes of 25 burgers, 8 ounces each, item number 3611080; Omaha Steaks Burgers in 24-ounce boxes of 6 burgers, item number 1249; Ground Beef in 50-pound boxes with two 25-pound bags, item number 0710004; and Horizon Ground Chuck Patties (Angus) in 10-pound boxes of 32 burgers, 5 ounces each, item number 4011050. The production date for these items is July 18, 2000, with a production code beginning with 07180 and ending with 21, 22 or 25. These products were distributed nationally by mail order, retail, wholesale, Internet sales or door to door. “Department of Agriculture food safety inspectors will be checking to make sure these products have been removed from warehouse and grocery store shelves during their routine inspections,” said Commissioner Irvin. “I urge Georgians to check their freezers to see if they have any of these affected products and return them to the place of purchase or contact the manufacturer for a refund,” said Irvin. E. coli 0157:H7 produces a toxin that can cause severe illness, particularly in children. Symptoms include diarrhea and dehydration.
