000925 Food Celebrities to Select a $20,000 BurgerSeptember 23, 2000St. Helena, CA - California's Napa Valley is renowned for fine wine and haute cuisine, so when five of the nation's most renowned food personalities gather to judge a recipe contest cookoff, the featured food must be . . . burgers? Indeed. In early October, a dream team of chefs, cookbook writers, and food journalists will be at Sutter Home Winery to judge the grilling finale of the winery's 10th annual Build a Better Burger Recipe Contest, a summerlong, recipe competition inviting backyard grillmeisters to concoct delicious, out-of-the- ordinary burgers. From nearly 1,000 entries, five finalists from throughout the U.S. were selected to come to Sutter Home on Saturday, October 7th to grill up their imaginative creations and compete for a $20,000 grand prize. Their efforts will be judged by Sheila Lukins, author of the Silver Palate cookbooks and food editor of Parade magazine; Marion Cunningham, food columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and author of the 13th edition of the Fannie Farmer Cookbook and the Fannie Farmer Baking Book; Bruce Aidells, founder of Aidells Sausage Company and author of eight cookbooks; Arthur Schwartz, host of “Arthur Schwartz With Food Talk” on New York's WOR Radio, among the most popular food shows in the U.S.; head judge and best-selling cookbook author James McNair; and Sutter Home Executive Chef Jeffrey Starr. This year's prize-winning recipes are typical of the exotic burgers that have spiced past years' contests: Asiago Pine Nut Burgers with Smoky Aioli by Steve Bradley of Bolingbrook, IL; Shogun Chargrilled Beef Burgers by Mary Louise Lever of Rome, GA; Hawaiian Tuna Burgers with Maui Wowee Salsa by Jamie Miller of Maple Grove, MN; Vintner's Burgers Provencal by Frank Rodriguez of Houston TX; and Roquefort Lamb Burgers with Grilled Pears by Claudia Shepardson of Loudinville NY.
