000905 Simek's Offers Refunds After E. Coli Detected

September 10, 2000

St. Paul Park, MN - About 30,000 pounds of contaminated meat were pulled from shelves at Simek's meat stores in the Twin Cities Wednesday after cases of e-coli bacteria contamination were reported. The St. Paul meat company said that it is recalling three varieties of frozen ground beef patties.

Three people who ate the patties in the past month became ill. Each person tested positive for E. coli.

The recall only includes products with lot numbers on the package with the first four digits 0162. The following items are being recalled.

One-third-pound beef patties sold in six-pound boxes. Two-pound bags of 91% lean ground beef patties. Ten-pound boxes of quarter-pound patties.

Simek's is offering a full refund for returned items.

The products were sold at 13 Simek's stores in the Twin Cities and nine grocery stores.

Symptoms of E. coli poisoning include severe flu-like symptoms, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. Poisoning can be avoided if meat is cooked to 160 degrees.
