000869 Pennsylvania Firm Recalls Cheese Franks

August 31, 2000

Washington - A Pennsylvania meat processor is voluntarily recalling 6,588 pounds of cheese franks that may be contaminated with metal fragments.

The franks, which were produced by Berks Packing Co. of Reading, Pa., were distributed to grocery stores in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, the Agriculture Department said.

The product being recalled is in one-pound packages of “WEIS Quality” brand franks. Each package bears “EST. 8782” in the USDA seal of inspection, and a code of “4 Sell by Oct. 17.” The problem was identified after a consumer found metal fragments in the product.
