000733 Michigan Firm Recalls 4260 Pounds of Meat

July 10, 2000

Washington - Top-Kut Meats voluntarily recalled approximately 4200 pounds of ground beef and 60 pounds of ground pork sausage that may contain the E. coli bacterium.

The products were distributed to restaurants in Calhoun, Kalamazoo, Eaton, Jackson and Branch counties in southern Michigan.

“Consumers may wish to ask at the restaurant where they buy meals containing ground beef or pork sausage if the restaurant received any of the recalled products,” the US Food Safety Inspection Service said in an announcement.

The ground beef, produced on June 27 and 29, also was sold at Top-Kut's store in Battle Creek, Michigan. Customers who purchased ground beef from the store should return it, FSIS said.

E. coli 0157:H7 is a potentially deadly pathogen that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, elderly and people with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to food-borne illness.

No reports of illness associated with the products have been received by FSIS. It discovered the problem through routine testing.

Five-and 10-pound bags of ground beef were shipped in boxes carrying establishment number “10024” inside the Agriculture Department inspection mark. The boxes also were labeled with the product name, “Top-Kut Meats Ground Beef” and the code “262” or “254.”

The pork sausage was produced on June 29 and distributed to one restaurant in Calhoun County. The packages, labeled “Top-Kut Meats” “PORK SAUSAGE (FOR GRAVY),” have the establishment code “P-10024” inside the Agriculture Department inspection seal and come in various weights.
