000717 Scobee Recalls Chicken Sandwiches

July 3, 2000

Mesquite, TX - Scobee Foods Inc. is recalling 12,000 chicken salad sandwiches from stores in seven states because they may contain an organism that can be fatal to young children and people with weak immune systems.

The sandwiches were distributed through convenience stores under the labels `Scobee Deli Chicken Salad Sandwich' and `Express Deli Chicken Salad Sandwich'. The labels on both sandwiches have sell-by dates of July 14 or July 21.

Company officials said the sandwiches are distributed in Texas, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

The sandwiches have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious infections in children and frail or elderly people. Although the organism may cause short-term symptoms in healthy people - fever, nausea, headache, stiffness, abdominal pain and diarrhea - it can cause stillbirth or miscarriages in pregnant women.

The possible contamination was discovered through a routine sampling program. The company said no illnesses or incidents had been reported.
