000629 Knowledgeable Thieves Swipe 7 Tons of BeefJune 14, 2000Montevideo, Uruguay - Two Epicurean thieves robbed seven tons of Uruguay's renowned grass-fed beef from a meatpacking house in the capital, local press reported. The robbers knew their culinary stuff as they made off with the choicest cuts earmarked for export, company workers said. Beef is Uruguay's top export, and the small coastal nation of 3.2 million people ships out more than 250,000 tons every year. On par with neighboring Argentina, Uruguay's product is characterized by its lean, all-natural quality. The Montevideo meat caper occurred when two men gained access to the slaughter plant posing as messengers. They tied up and gagged the guard before raiding the blast freezers and transferring the booty to refrigerated trucks. E-mail: sflanagan@sprintmail.com |
