000539 Fight BAC! Praises U.S. For Food Safety Messages

May 28, 2000

Washington - The Partnership for Food Safety Education welcomes the inclusion of food safety messages in the revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans. For the first time since they were first published in 1985, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans will include helpful tips on how to safely handle food to reduce the incidence of foodborne illness.

“Safe food handling is an essential part of overall good health,” says Tim Hammonds, President of the Food Marketing Institute, a leading organization in the Partnership for Food Safety Education. “That has been the core message of the Partnership since it was formed by industry, the government and consumer groups in 1997. We welcome the addition of these messages as part of the Dietary Guidelines.”

While the United States has one of the safest food supplies in the world, preventing foodborne illness remains a major public health challenge. The Partnership developed the Fight BAC! public education campaign in conjunction with the President's National Food Safety Initiative to simplify and provide useful information about safe food handling of all foods. The Fight BAC! campaign messages have reached millions of consumers across the nation through activities including a grassroots campaign, school education programs, a Fight BAC! website, BAC! Talk newsletters, and a food safety calendar.

“Through the Fight BAC! campaign, the Partnership educates consumers about four simple food safety steps,” says J. Patrick Boyle, President and CEO of the American Meat Institute and a partnership member. “Following these steps can help in the fight against foodborne illness.”
