000434 Tyson CEO Britt Announces RetirementApril 15, 2000Springdale, AR - Wayne Britt is retiring unexpectedly after 11/2 years as chief executive of Tyson Foods Inc., the world's largest poultry concern. Britt, 50, will turn over his duties to John H. Tyson, the company's 46- year-old chairman, the company said. “I am leaving because our transition to a new generation is complete and, frankly, I would like time to pursue other interests,” Britt said. “My adult life has been dedicated to Tyson Foods, and I am proud to have been associated with its many outstanding people and firmly believe in the company's future potential.” Tyson has been chairman since October 1998 and a board member since 1984. He is the grandson of company founder John W. Tyson. Tyson Foods spokesman Ed Nicholson said Tyson's role as CEO was permanent and that Britt's decision “wasn't anticipated.” Founded in 1935, Tyson Foods is the world's largest poultry producer, processor and marketer with annual sales of more than $7 billion.
