000120 UFCW Announces Agreement With Empire KosherJanuary 13, 2000Wilkes-Barre, PA - By a 2 to 1 margin (485 yes to 235 no), members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776 at Empire Kosher Poultry in Mifflintown (the world's largest kosher poultry plant) voted to accept a new three-year labor agreement. “The Union negotiating team represented the workforce well, as we were able to maintain health insurance for employees and their families at no cost to the employee. We fought attempts by the company to try to institute co-payments. I'm pleased to announce all health insurance costs, including prescription, vision, dental and accident/sickness disability plans will be paid 100% by the employer,” stated Thomas Lazur, Chief Negotiator and Director of the Northeast Division of UFCW Local 1776. “I commend the members of our 21 person, in-plant negotiating committee who stood together and stood strong for the 900 workers they represent. Through determination and solidarity a contract was achieved that includes wage, pension and multiple language improvements for the workforce,” stated UFCW Local 1776 President Wendell W. Young, III.
