000115 Irradiation System Launched by Poultry Distributor

January 8, 2000

San Diego - The Titan Corporation announced that Zero Mountain, Inc., has agreed to purchase an X-ray pasteurization system using Titan's patented SureBeam technology. Zero Mountain is one of the nation's largest independent suppliers of cold storage and distribution services for the poultry industry, handling in excess of two billion pounds annually. The new state-of-the-art food pasteurization facility, the third such Titan facility, will be located adjacent to Zero Mountain's cold storage facility in Russellville, Arkansas and will be used primarily to pasteurize poultry and food products. Titan's strategic partner APA, Inc. of Omaha, Nebraska will provide certain engineering, mechanical and technical support.

Under the terms of the multiyear agreement, Titan will be the exclusive provider of electronic pasteurization systems, services, and technology to Zero Mountain which operates 24 million cubic feet of cold storage facilities throughout the State of Arkansas and provides storage services for more than 30 clients, including some of the largest international exporters of poultry and beef in the country. In turn, Zero Mountain will purchase a SureBeam system from Titan and have access to Titan's Sioux City, Iowa pasteurization facility for test marketing purposes. Specifically, the agreement calls for the creation of a subsidiary of Zero Mountain which will own and operate the SureBeam X-ray pasteurization system and offer pasteurization services to users of the Russellville cold storage facility. Titan will have a minority ownership position in the new Zero Mountain subsidiary, furthering the company's strategic goal of participating in the ongoing revenue and profit stream generated by providing pasteurization services.

Zero Mountain elected to acquire Titan's X-ray pasteurization system instead of an electron beam system, which uses substantially the same technology, because it intends to pasteurize food directly in the boxes it receives from its customers. Titan's patented SureBeam X-ray pasteurization system is most effective for pasteurization of large boxes, containers or pallets of products. Both the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have already approved the use of Titan's SureBeam technology, which uses a stream of energized electrons to eliminate harmful food borne pathogens on poultry, red meat and fruits and vegetables.

“Zero Mountain has been a pioneer in the cold storage industry for almost 50 years. We believe that their decision to move forward with an electronic pasteurization system will encourage others in the cold storage industry to offer their clients the same services,” said Gene W. Ray, Chairman, President and CEO of the Titan Corporation. “We are particularly pleased with Mr. Rumsey and Zero Mountain's decision to choose Titan's technology for their pasteurization service offering.”

“We believe that in the near future, pasteurization of poultry is what all consumers will demand and we intend to be at the forefront of this change,” said Mark Rumsey, President and Chief Executive officer of Zero Mountain. “We reviewed all of our options for eliminating food borne pathogens very carefully. For years, we studied Titan's SureBeam(r) technology as well as the competing technology, Cobalt 60. We chose Titan's technology because by using commercial electricity as the source of energy, it is able to pasteurize food without any affect on taste, texture, or nutritional value. In addition, Titan was the only company offering a complete turnkey system capable of integrating directly onto our cold storage facility,” concluded Rumsey. “Since our founding in 1955, we have been committed to offering our customers the best technology for food quality, safety and storage. The partnership we have entered into with Titan demonstrates our continued commitment to these principles,” said Joseph F. Rumsey, co-founder of Zero Mountain.

Headquartered in San Diego, California, The Titan Corporation provides communications and information technology services and solutions. In addition, Titan markets the leading technology for the electronic pasteurization of food. Titan seeks to capitalize on government funded R&D and the Company's core competency in information and telecommunications systems by creating unique commercial businesses offering advanced technology solutions. The Company has annualized sales of over $400 million, a total backlog in excess of $1 billion, and approximately 3,400 employees.
