000105 CME 1999 Volume Off 11.4% From Previous YearJanuary 8, 2000Chicago - The Chicago Mercantile Exchange said that 1999 volume was 11.4% lower than the previous year at 200,737,123 contracts versus 226,618,831. Volume last month fell to 14,101,805 contracts, off 9.0% from the 15,500,270 contracts traded in December 1998. At year's end, open interest stood at 6,412,014 contracts, down 11.9% from 7,281,701 contracts open at the end of 1998. Trading in the GLOBEX2 electronic system rose nearly 81% from 1998 to a record 16.1 million contracts, and total volume for all equity index products rose 9.1% in 1999 to 48,065,981 from the prior year. Volume in Standard & Poor's 500 futures was down 14.1% to 27,003,387 contracts in 1999 from 31,430,523 the previous year.
