991242 NY Firm Recalls Meat Due To Bacteria ThreatDecember 20, 1999 Washington - Hannelore Gourmet Foods Ltd. is voluntarily recalling their mousse truffee products after deadly listeria bacteria were spotted in them, the Department of Agriculture said. The New York-based firm recalled 400 pounds of D'Artagnan Pork Free Mousse Truffee, a pate-type specialty product, that were distributed nationwide and possibly through Internet sales. The products are in 8-ounce packages and have the package number P9678 inside the USDA seal of inspection, and the date code Dec 13 1999 is stamped on the back of each product. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, investigating several reports of illnesses, alerted the USDA after finding a positive listeria test result in the product. No illnesses have been definitively linked to this product, the USDA said. Exposure to food contaminated with listeria can cause stillbirths or be fatal to the elderly, children or people with weak immune systems. For most people, listeria infection causes high fever, headaches and stiffness in the neck. |
