991202 NY Firm Recalls Chicken Nuggets For SalmonellaDecember 1, 1999 Washington - A U.S. company is recalling imported chicken nuggets distributed in the New York City area out of concern the meat may be contaminated with dangerous salmonella bacteria. Woodridge Meats, Inc. of Woodridge, NY, is recalling 1,800 pounds of chicken nuggets imported from Israel after routine government testing discovered traces of salmonella in the meat, the USDA said. Salmonella bacteria can cause nausea, fever and diarrhea. Approximately 40,000 cases are reported in the United States each year, but the actual number is believed to be much higher because many cases go unreported or misdiagnosed. Some 100 deaths a year are traced to salmonella. No illnesses have been linked to the recalled nuggets, the Agriculture Department said. Involved in the recall are "OF-TOV" brand breaded, fully cooked nuggets in 20-pound boxes. |
