990845 Maryland Packer Recalls 35 Lbs Of Sausage

August 19, 1999

Washington - A Baltimore meat processing firm was voluntarily recalling 35 pounds of sausage that may be contaminated with the disease-causing salmonella bacteria, the U.S. Agriculture Department said.

The sausage, produced by Paul Schafer Meat Products Inc., was sold in one- pound packages under the label of "Holsteiner Dry Sausage" and was distributed only in Baltimore. The packages carry no sell-by date but "EST 2673" appears in the Agriculture Department inspection seal.

Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food-borne illnesses. Infections can be life-threatening. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever as well as chills, headache, nausea and vomiting.

No illness have been reported from the recalled product. Possible contamination of the meat was discovered during routine monitoring.
