990753 Michigan Firm Recalls Ham For Possible Listeria

July 30, 1999

Washington - A Michigan processing company is recalling 200 pounds of sliced hams after dangerous listeria bacteria was spotted in meat produced by the firm, the U.S. Agriculture Department said.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the hams, the department said.

Dearborn Sausage Company of Dearborn, Mich., is recalling its “Sprial Sliced Ham with Glaze Packet” and “Sliced Hickory Ham,” the USDA said.

The hams were produced on July 20 and were only distributed in Michigan.

Listeria causes high fever, headaches, and neck stiffness among most people. But the bacteria can cause stillbirths and is potentially fatal for those with weak immune systems.

Last year, 15 deaths and six miscarriages and stillbirths were linked to an outbreak of listeria associated with another Michigan company. That case sparked the Agriculture Department to study methods to halt the bacteria from spreading.
