990613 Chicago Firm Recalls 1,285 Pounds of Hot Dogs

June 5, 1999

Washington - A Chicago-based meat company has voluntarily recalled 1,285 pounds of hot dogs because they may contain a bacteria that can cause serious illness, the U.S. Agriculture Department said.

The Real Sausage Co. ordered the recall after a sample of the product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes during routine sampling by U.S. meat inspectors, the department said.

The skinless franks were only sold to institutional users and not to retail outlets, the department said. The company's customers have been contacted by phone.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeria, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease for infants, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses and those undergoing chemotherapy.
