May 16, 1999

Raleigh, NC - Nearly 17,000 pounds of ready-to-eat meat products are being recalled after inspectors detected listeria bacteria.

The bacteria was found in only one brand of the packaged meat, but White Packing Co. is voluntary recalling 16 brands processed at its plant in Williamston and distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, New Jersey and Virginia, officials said.

There have been no reports of illnesses.

Samples taken from packages of Western Beef Cooked Sliced Ham processed on May 4 confirmed the presence of listeria, a kind of bacteria that can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea and can lead to death.

Products affected by the recall include: Jesse Jones brand thick bologna, premium ham and premium chopped ham; Super A brand cooked salami, luncheon loaf, chicken bologna and bologna; Western Beef brand cooked salami, luncheon loaf, beef bologna, turkey bologna, bologna, chicken bologna and sliced cooked ham; Shop Rite brand cooked salami and Olymel brand sliced cooked ham.

Only products bearing a sell-by date of June 23 are affected by the recall. Buyers can return the product to the store for a refund.
