990385 U.S. to Buy $6 Billion Worth of Bison Meat

March 24, 1999

Washington - The U.S. Agriculture Department said it would buy up to $6 million worth of bison meat to use in government feeding programs to help boost prices for bison ranchers.

Meat produced from bison has been up against stiff competition from ample and low-priced U.S. supplies of beef, pork and poultry.

“This purchase will help offset the impact of the surplus supply of bison meat and provide a quality product to participants in federal food assistance programs,” said Enrique Fiqueroa of the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service.

Last year, the USDA bought $2.5 million worth of ground bison.

The USDA buys a variety of meats, fruits and vegetables each year for the federal school lunch program and other feeding programs.
