990254 Mexico Meat Output Seen Rising Up To 5% in 1999

Monterrey, Mexico - Mexican meat production is expected to jump up to 5.0% in 1999, topping the 5.3 million tonnes produced last year, a top agriculture ministry official said.

"Meat as a whole, chicken, beef and pork, will this year grow between 4.0 and 5.0%," said deputy agriculture minister Francisco Gurria Trevino, adding that total meat production had reached more than 5.3 million tonnes in 1998.

Trevino Gurria said Mexico in 1998 managed to produce 98.3% of the meat needed in order to meet local consumption demands.
