990113 “National Chicken Council” Takes Flight

January 4, 1999

Washington - The trade association for the chicken production and processing industry has officially become the National Chicken Council, more committed than ever to its mission of promoting America's favorite meal -- chicken.

Americans currently buy more than 74 pounds of chicken every year, making it #1 at the center of the plate, well ahead of beef or pork, its main competitors. Americans purchased approximately $35 billion worth of chicken in 1998.

The National Chicken Council operated for 44 years as the National Broiler Council, employing a term that was once widely recognized as the name for a chicken raised specifically for its meat. Over the years, however, the distinction has eroded as nearly all of the chicken found in supermarket meat cases consists of broilers (or fryers -- the terms mean the same thing).

To clear up any confusion about its mission, the association's Board of Directors voted to change the name to National Chicken Council as of January 1, 1999. To go with the new name, the board adopted a new logo that proclaims “Chicken: America's Favorite.”

“Chicken is America's favorite food at the center of the plate,” said NCC President George Watts. “We plan not only to keep it that way, but to build on our success for the future.”

The address and phone number remain the same: National Chicken Council, 1015 15th Street NW, Suite 930, Washington DC 20005, phone (202) 296-2622, fax (202) 293-4005.
