AUSTIN, MN - Hormel Foods Corp., the maker of Spam luncheon meats and other foods, said it formed a joint venture in the Philippines that will produce and market canned foods and refrigerated meats.
In a statement, Hormel said its international division and Pure Foods Corp., a major consumer foods company based in Manila, formed the venture, effective Dec. 26, 1998.
Hormel said the processed meat division of Pure Foods will be spun off to the joint venture, with Pure Foods retaining a 60 percent ownership and Hormel owning 40 percent.
Hormel has owned an interest in Pure Foods since 1972. The company is licensed to make Spam and various other Hormel products such as chopped ham, Vienna sausage, corned beef, luncheon meat and pepperoni.
“Expanding our successful relationship with Pure Foods will enable us to increase our branded food business in the Philippines and Southeast Asia,” V. Allan Krejci, director of public relations for Hormel, said in the statement.
