Arden Hills, MN - Land O'Lakes has issued a statement commending action by USDA to support hog prices in November. In a letter to USDA, Land O'Lakes President Jack Gherty told Ag Secretary Dan Glickman that the action taken was “welcome news.”
Gherty thanked Glickman for the November 24 announcement that USDA would spend $50 million to buy pork for domestic feeding programs. He also praised the Secretary's earlier decision to include 50,000 metric tons of pork in a food assistance package to Russia.
The Land O'Lakes president had contacted Glickman early in November to urge action in response to a “disastrous” hog market. In his November 24 letter to USDA, Gherty said that the action taken sends a strong message of support to America's pork producers.
Gherty urged Glickman to closely watch hog markets next year. “None of us who serve hog farmers believe that the crisis has ended. I encourage you to continue to order timely purchases of additional quantities of pork in 1999 until the markets recover to profitable levels.”
