Chicago - Feliz Navidad. 'Los Tres Cochinitos' (The Three Little Pigs) and 'Las Posadas' pork promotions are headed for grocery stores this Christmas holiday season in Mexico and the southwest U.S., pork industry sources announced.
In the first ever simultaneous promotion of pork on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border, National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) in conjunction with U.S. Meat Export Federation will be enticing Latino shoppers who buy a lot of pork for the holidays.
“Pork is the preferred meat served in traditional Mexican Christmas meals,” Alejandro Gonzales, pork manager for the USMEF in Mexico City said in a Wednesday release.
Pork stew, pork tamales and boiled pork dishes are popular during the holiday season.
Gonzales said participating Mexican retailers anticipated increased pork sales during the promotion and made arrangements to have extra supplies of U.S. pork available to meet the increased demand.
“This pork promotion will help the United States increase it's market share to Mexico. This is especially important to U.S. pork producers during this critical period of low cash hog prices and record supplies,” said Karl Johnson, NPPC trade committee chairman.
The promotions will be featured in more than 200 retail food stores in 26 Mexican cities.
U.S. retail markets with large populations of Latino consumers in San Diego, Calif., Albuquerque, N.M., El Paso, Texas, Denver, Colo., and Phoenix, Ariz., also will be targeted with the holiday pork promotions.
In the U.S., 'Las Posadas' promotions will use English and Spanish speaking radio advertisements with newspaper ads. NPPC also will sponsor a consumer sweepstakes that will award pork gift certificates at participating U.S. retail stores.
