TAR HEEL, NC - Smithfield Packing is challenging the state's decision to prohibit expansion of its Tar Heel hog processing plant. Last month, the state Division of Water Quality issued a wastewater permit that caps the Bladen County plant's production. It also penalizes farms for water pollution violations by prohibiting them from selling to the plant for one year. The Fayetteville Observer-Times reports that Smithfield and the North Carolina Pork Council have filed petitions challenging those conditions.
