OAK BROOK, IL - McDonald's Corporation announced the opening of its first restaurant in the island-nation of Sri Lanka, bringing the total number of countries where McDonald's operates restaurants to 114.
The opening in Sri Lanka marks another step in McDonald's global expansion, and is the 20th country McDonald's has added since opening in neighboring India less than two years ago.
“We're optimistic that Asia will remain a strong and growing market for McDonald's. Our investment in Sri Lanka is the latest step in our long-term growth plans for Asia,” said Jim Cantalupo, vice chairman of McDonald's Corporation and chairman and chief executive officer of McDonald's International.
McDonald's Sri Lankan licensee, Rusi Pestonjee said, “Not only are we bringing the great taste of McDonald's to Sri Lanka, we're bringing job opportunities and infrastructure investment to the country.”
The first McDonald's restaurant is located in Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka. Colombo, with over one million residents, is the port-of-entry for hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.
The restaurant will offer customers the same menu found at McDonald's around the world, with one exception: pork products will not be served, out of respect for Muslim dietary practices followed by many Sri Lankans.
McDonald's is the largest global foodservice retailer, with nearly 25,000 restaurants, serving more than 38 million people each day in 114 countries.
