980960 Canada will Raise Trade Dispute with U.S.

September 22, 1998

Winnipeg - Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy planned to raise the issue of a week-old cattle and grain trade dispute when he meets with U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, a government spokeswoman said.

Canada has had little satisfaction from the United States since South Dakota Governor Bill Janklow last week ordered a ban on trucks carrying Canadian grain unless the shipments were certified free of disease and livestock unless it was free of certain antibiotics.

The order mainly has hit Canadian cattle and hog producers who have held back from moving shipments into South Dakota or driving around the state, which does not border Canada.

Sylvie Millette LeDuc, spokeswoman for Canadian Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief, said the minister has asked Canada's ambassador in Washington to speak to USDA Secretary Glickman directly.

Vanclief has spoken with Glickman several times already on the matter in the past week.
