New York - New York's Maloney & Porcelli, Ruth's Chris Steak House in Beverly Hills, Morton's of Chicago in Washington, D.C. and Chicago's Palm Restaurant are among the restaurants recognized as the best for business in "America's Top Tables" in an evaluation of over 3,500 restaurants in the U.S. and Canada by Gourmet magazine readers. The results of the extensive survey are published in the October issue.
Several of the award-winning restaurants are steak houses and other establishments known for ample portions of beef, pork and lobster. The signature dish at Maloney & Porcelli is a deep-fried, two-and-a-half-pound shank of pork. Also, lobsters weighing up to five pounds are often ordered. In diet-obsessed Los Angeles, Ruth Chris Steak House, diners enjoy a 22-ounce T-bone steak. For the real power lunch, a 40-ounce porterhouse steak for two is a popular choice.
In both cities, "big food" places beat last year's winners, which were Harry Cipriani in New York and Pacific Dining Car in LA, two restaurants known for more delicate fare.
In San Francisco, not widely known as a town for steak, Le Central Bistro, this year's winner for best for business, serves numerous orders of 12-ounce New York steak with fries and smothered with sauteed onions.
