980931 Colorado State Health Investigating Rare Disease

September 17, 1998

Denver, CO - State health officials have begun an investigation to determine if a woman has a rare brain ailment linked to mad cow disease. The unidentified, middle-aged woman has some symptoms of Cruetzfeld-Jakob disease. A variation of the illness was linked to the outbreak of so- called mad cow disease, resulting from contaminated beef. State epidemiologist Richard Hoffman says there is NO evidence that the Colorado woman's illness is linked to contaminated beef. He says health officials want to confirm that the woman has the disease and to see how she got it. The woman, who has not been identified, is being treated in a Denver hospital.
