Los Angeles - The food industry has found a new option in distributing excess or surplus inventories.
SurplusFoods.com has created an Internet site that is designed to be a complete surplus inventory management solution, providing an electronic marketplace where members can buy and sell surplus inventory.
This business-to-business site is an electronic clearinghouse that allows sellers to efficiently move excess, surplus, close-out, and overrun inventory, as well as allowing purchasers to take advantage of extraordinary deals.
The industry has embraced SurplusFoods.com by showing an overwhelming response. SurplusFoods.com has signed more than 70 new members onto its Web site since May 20, 1998, when it officially launched its program at the National Restaurant Association's national food show.
“One reason for this response is that we have made the site extremely user- friendly,” said Jody Helfend, president of SurplusFoods.com. The company also is one of the first Internet sites to provide an “easy-to-use” manual for its site.
SurplusFoods.com also has a social conscience toward the hunger problem that is facing the United States. “With over 4 million children and 30 million people going hungry every month in the United States, recovering a portion of the 96 billion pounds of food wasted has got to be a priority,” said Mr. Helfend. In this spirit, SurplusFoods.com has made available its Web site to food banks in order to feed the hungry.
SurplusFoods.com members can simply select a donation button on the Web site, and a pre-qualified food recovery agency will make arrangements to pick up the products. The Internet site will allow any food producer, manufacturer, distributor or operator to quickly and efficiently donate their surplus food products to one of our charity members.
SurplusFoods.com also has several “value-added” features such as the Industry News section. Members are kept up to date with reports on the meat and poultry industries, commodities, as well as headline news from the food industry.
Other features include Market Analysis, which has experts' opinions as to the future of the food industry in its different segments and a weekly summary of the USDA's National Agricultural weather report.
